Exhibiting with Friends

Last weekend I joined forces with Amanda Clark (Earth Angels Art) and Amanda Sheldrake to put on a stall at the Mayor's Appeal Art Exhibition in Saffron Walden.

 It's the first time I've ever done a stall like this and was interested to see what the response was to my work.

 My only wish with regards selling was to make back the money I'd paid for the stall....

A Witch is for Life! Not Just for Hallowe'en....

 I did prove that a Witch is for Life! Not Just for Hallowe'en... I sold several cards of witches despite Hallowe'en having just gone...

It was hard work and great fun, I enjoyed painting all day and talking to people as well as being with other artists.  I received lots of positive feedback and made more than the stall fee so I was very happy.

Strange Fruit

Ah! These strange fruit tell such stories - of passion and poison, temptation and tears, seeds, snakes and stars; of Persephone, Snow White and Eve; the nameless Handless Maiden and the King's pear garden... Please take a bite and be transformed, your decision may have dire consequences but it will certainly change your life - with knowledge, love and even death...

This is a mini exhibition running alongside my gallery's Summer show, welcoming in the first fruits of the autumn to come. Something inspired by some paintings I was doing and the work of some of our wonderful artists...

Not the most cohesive show I've done to date, more the germ of an idea ripening slowly, so I added some flower lamps and glass flowers into the mix to fill the space.  However, it is a project I intend to continue myself and hope to exhibit...

Horseplay

This week we opened a new exhibition at my gallery, called 'Horseplay - Equine Grace'.  I am not a horsey person in that I don't ride and am quite scared of them; however I find them so beautiful that they bring a lump to my throat.  I would love to see wild horses running together in that wonderful rolling wave, moving as one with manes flying.  For the moment I content myself with sitting in a gallery amidst gorgeous paintings of them.

The show is mainly inspired around the work of Yolande Kenny who paints very personal and emotive horse portraits.  With the use of unusual viewpoints - looking up from close to the horse's head or being literally nose-to-nose, she captures their unique personalities intimately as seen through the eyes of their owner.  Whether painted in oil on linen or drawn in graphite Yolande's skill is in catching the power and gentle strength of these graceful creatures.

I also included Gena Ivanov's colourful watercolours evoking the wild flowing nature of horses...

...along with Ramzieh Baj's more primal and fantastic painting inspired by the Nart Saga (heroic Circassian tales from the Caucasus)  and very controlled print of the famous Desert Orchid....

Fairytale - Curious Realms

At my gallery we have recently launched a new show called 'Fairytale - Curious Realms of the Imagination', which is on until the 24th March. It's a subject that has always fascinated me and this is The exhibition I had always wanted to put on in an art gallery. Over the last year I have gathered a number of artists whose work has touched this intriguing area, and when planning the shows for 2012 I felt the time was right to bring them all together in one exhibition. 

The first artist to enter the realm of faerie was Neil Payne, whose intricate collages and sculptures are created from found objects, used and worn until finally discarded giving a sense of timelessness and secret worlds.

Followed by Helena-A Reut, a native of Belarus, whose work has a remarkable quality of capturing the subject and holding them in a sacred moment of ordinary everyday-ness.  She also paints images from myths and fables from her own country.

Next is the delightfully dark and humorous Celeste Copping, an illustrator in acrylics of slightly sinister fairy tale and nursery characters - the sort of images that kids really love as well as adults.

Now for the enchanting Amanda Clark whose luminous work is so evocative of the mystery of our land and magical nature.  I am especially smitten by her new works in the show - Tree Ladies.

Then we have paper and book sculptor Justin Rowe, who uses books as a base for his paper-cut characters.  Some elements of which are sculpted from paper and lit from within, reminding me of a 3D village in winter that my dad made for Christmas one year.

Two other wanderers of the secret world are Sue Law with her ‘Glass Slipper’ moulded from a real foot and shoe, only fits one person!

And Amanda Sheldrake with her swirling figures in gorgeous flower-filled gardens, making you wonder whether she’s painted real faery folk!

Last and I hope not least, I couldn’t help but include my own work - illustrations of classic fairy tales.
